DANTE ELEPHANTE

I finally got the chance to chat with Ruben Zarate of Dante Elephante, whose music I’ve loved ever since I first stumbled across it a few years ago. He’s just as fun to have a conversation with as his surfy, danceable songs would suggest, and we covered everything from his favorite venue in LA, to the unlikely impact those “Sounds of the 60s” infomercials had on him while he was growing up.

“For ninety years, MOMA has stood as a monument to the paradoxical alignment of capital and counterculture.”

“Now that I have people’s attention, how can I push them to read differently? To look at language differently? To invest in a language that they might not have before?”

SIGHTS & SOUNDS

Grey Gardens is a cult classic documentary which explores the daily lives of two aging, eccentric relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. It’s a strange film full of moments of second guessing, fading beauty, and a whole lot of Edie — a self-described “staunch character.”

Ruben was kind enough to pull together a playlist of what he’s been listening to lately, and I threw in a few of my favorite Dante Elephante songs for good measure.
